Outreach Project

A Multimedia Project on Environment and Development

An integrated package of film, print and education materials that shows how careless economic development is destroying the global environment.

Only One Earth is linked to the publication of Our Common Future, the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, chaired by Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland. As well as looking at the world's major environmental problems, the project also shows examples of "sustainable development" that improves living standards without damaging the environment.

Produced in a "popular" style, the documentary films and accompanying publications are intended to appeal to a wide general audience, and have been designed with an international distribution in mind. The programs are also suitable for use in schools, and a special education pack is available.

Three One-Hour 'Global' Documentaries

The Road to Ruin
An introductory film that shows how our long-term economic future is dependent on a healthy environment: filmed in the drylands of Senegal, the Mexican rain forest and the fisheries of the North Sea.

The Sinking Ark
A natural history film that vividly portrays the importance to mankind of a genetically diverse natural resource base: filmed in Madagascar, Peru, Brazil, Kenya, Southeast Asia and the Galapagos Islands.

The Fate of the Forests
The story of how shortsighted development is rapidly destroying the world's forests: filmed in the acid rain damaged forest of Europe and the rainforests of Panama.

Eight Half-Hour Case Studies

Eight stories about individuals who have come to realize that there is indeed Only One Earth: subjects include a Buddhist Monk in deforested Sri Lanka, a Rendille nomad in the deserts of Kenya, a tuna fisherman in the South Pacific, and a Californian housewife in polluted Silicon Valley; other films cover stories in China, Zimbabwe, Britain and Peru.
